ANU cosmologist and astrophysicist Dr Brad Tucker says the contents of black holes is the “mysterious part” of the space phenomena. “Once things get inside, we can’t see it, we can’t even see that light,” he told Sky News Australia. “We do think black holes leak energy, one of these ideas is we think black holes aren’t these things that just sit there but in fact they need to feed.” Dr Tucker said a theory is black holes “need to swallow stars and light” as they may use or lose energy over time – which is calling Hawking radiation. “If black holes don’t feed over billions and billions and trillions of years, black holes can actually die,” he said. “Trying to understand then what exactly happens to the stuff when it goes into it, we think the matter is just destroyed but we do see things coming out, people hypothesise black holes could actually be wormholes.”
