The federal government has held crisis talks with critical industry groups overnight as staff shortages due to the Omicron variant threaten to cripple the economy. Prime Minister Scott Morrison will seek a nationwide deal to relax isolation requirements for workers at National Cabinet tomorrow but experts warn a lack of rapid antigen tests will undermine the agreement. Food distributors are asking for the close contact rules, which force people in the same household to quarantine, to be scrapped. Mr Morrison will meet representatives of the aviation and transport industries today to determine which services should have restrictions relaxed. Shops will likely be in short supply of fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and milk in the coming weeks as there are not enough workers in transport, processing or distribution to get items into shops.
