Economics professor Gigi Foster says Australia will have a large problem with “attracting people back in” to live and work. “I think we have seriously damaged our brand during this COVID period,” Ms Foster said. Ms Foster said the budget update, handed down on Thursday, is reliant on immigration to help Australia’s economy recover after the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think the big factor on both sides is immigration,” she said. “One of the reasons why we’ve had such a tight labour market is because we just don’t have the foreign workers and the students who take part time jobs coming in the door now.”
