Sydneysiders and Melburnians have celebrated the end of lockdowns by splashing their cash with data showing daily spending has surged to a mammoth $150 million. Since lockdowns lifted a fortnight ago, $1.3 billion dollars has been spent in New South Wales alone, the majority of which has been spent on hair and beauty care, in-store shopping, and recreation. Extra spending in New South Wales has jumped 20 per cent to $105 million while Victoria has seen a 10 per cent increase to $45 million. The latest figures come as the Department of Finance revealed surprisingly strong figures in the September quarter were enough to keep the country out of its second COVID recession.
